Ritwik Ghatak and Present Age
Ritwik Ghatak (1925-1975), this name used to sound somewhat boring in my childhood because in those days in TV, there were only 2/3 channels. Cable TV was not that popular. All the time during the cinema, something unusual happened. Although my mother used to watch constantly the cinemas with full concentration but I couldn't understand what is actually there to concentrate. Why do not those people do something violent in anger although the characters seemed to be in a lot of frustration and get cheated?
Later when I grew up, I came to know about the word "art film". My mother was my first teacher about film.
I learned about his life, that he was from then East Bengal, that the trauma of partition demolished the man completely and ultimately lead him to untimely death. Some 4/5 yrs back, I bought the book written by his wife Surama Ghatak about him and read it.
Now the question is, is he still relevant to the present techno savvy gizmos? Is he still capable of drawing the attention of young beauties? I stop here for now.
I'll come back soon .
Bye,
Debajit Biswas
